OHL Gold Cup begins today with six Kingston prospects participating
The OHL Gold Cup gets underway today in Kitchener, Ontario and the Kingston Frontenacs will be well represented. Six players selected by the Frontenacs in the 2018 OHL Priority selection will participate in the tournament that takes place May 3-6.
Kingston’s first round selection, Jake Murray of the Oakville Rangers, will suit up for OMHA Black. Jake was selected 13th overall by the Frontenacs. Jake is a 6.02 defenseman that recorded 40 points in 38 games with Oakville last season.
Bryce Ryan, a centre from the Windsor Jr. Spitfires, will be joined by Mathias Onuska, a goaltender from the Waterloo Wolves, on team ALLIANCE. Ryan was selected 93rd overall in the 5th round while Onuska was taken with Kingston’s 7th round pick at 133rd overall.
Another pair of Kingston selections will team up with GTHL Blue. Thomas Haynes, a defenseman from the Mississauga Senators and Kingston’s 8th round selection, will be joined by Liam Babcock of the Vaughan Kings who the Frontenacs took in the 10th round.
The final Kingston prospect participating in the tournament is Alex Caulfield of the Smiths Falls Bears. Alex is another defenseman Kingston took in the 13th round of the 2018 Priority selection. He will dress for team HEO.
The OHL Gold Cup will see 130 players that were drafted in the 2018 OHL Priority selection participate. A new format this year will have players participate in three off-ice education sessions, dedicated position specific practices, and a full team game-day skate. Each team will play three pool games as well as a crossover game on the final day of the tournament.
