The Kingston Frontenacs (25-34-1-2) lost 5-2 to the Mississauga Steelheads (29-26-6-0) on Saturday night at Leon’s Centre in the final matchup of the season for the Eastern Conference foes. Nathan Poole and team-point leader Ethan Miedema scored for Kingston. Porter Martone registered a hattrick, including an empty net marker for the visitors.

The Steelheads struck eights seconds into the game before taking a 3-0 lead to the first intermission. After the visitors struck for a 4-0 lead, Poole and Miedema made it 4-2 before Mississauga added the empty tally for the 5-2 final.

Kingston started Ivan Zhigalov in the crease for a 42nd appearance, making six saves on nine shots in the first period. Freshman Mason Vaccari entered the game for the start of the second period in a strong performance making 22 saves on 23 shots. Mississauga countered with Ryerson Leenders in his second game versus Kingston in the season series making 21 stops off 23 shots.

The visitors got on the board early on a Porter Martone (16) strike just eight seconds after the opening faceoff. James Hardie assisted on the tally coming on the first shot of the night.

Kingston went to a four-minute powerplay moments after the visitor strike and Leenders made a couple of good saves keeping the Mississauga lead intact with Kingston registering five straight shots on the opposition net.

The Steelheads scored a pair of tallies in the last half of the first frame, looking to improve on a 16-5-0-0 record when scoring first. It was 2-0 for the Steelheads with an Adam Zidlicky (8) goal with under eight minutes left in the first as the visitors were on a six-shot run.

The opening period’s scoring wrapped up when Zander Veccia (17) took advantage of a turnover in the Kingston zone for the 3-0 game-winning tally coming unassisted just over three minutes after the second Steelhead goal at 15:29.

A busy Vaccari began the second in the Kingston net, making a 26th appearance in his rookie season with the Fronts facing a 5-15-0-1 record when trailing after twenty minutes. The teams would combine for three goals in the powerplay-less frame, with Mississauga holding a 15-3 shot advantage.

The visitors pressured Kingston with seven of the eight combined shots in the first half of the second frame, but Vaccari stood tall coming off the bench getting warmed up quickly as Mississauga firing 16 overall midway through the game.

After Hardie was stuffed by Vaccari on a breakaway chance, the Mississauga forward followed up with a quick pass to Martone (17) in the Kingston crease for a redirection goal, and a second assist in the game. The 4-0 tally coming at 10:36, before Kingston scored a pair.

Nathan Poole (5) finished off a crease-crashing play to get Kingston on the board at 4-1. Chris Thibodeau tallied a fourth assist in three games after creating a turnover and making a nice play to get the puck to the front of the visiting crease for the assist, extending a point streak to three games. Assistant captain Alec Belanger added a helper to continue a point streak to four games (2G,3A) at 14:34.

Mississauga improved to an 19-2-2-0 record opening a final frame with a lead with the three-goal win. The game grew in animosity just under five minutes into the third after Martone hit Poole in the Steelhead corner beginning a full-line scrum, sending the teams four-on-four. Heyes and Martone were called on the play for minors.

Veccia was robbed of a second goal when Vaccari made a nice save midway through the third, moments before Fronts defender Ben Roger hit the post off a rush chance.

Miedema (13) buried shot past Leenders for a 4-2 score at 13:07. Owen Outwater earned the assist with a faceoff win directly to Miedema at the top of the circle extending a point streak to four games.

The Fronts continued to pressure with a couple great chances by Outwater and Tommy Budnick on the Mississauga net moments after the Miedema strike.

The visitors made it 5-2 on an empty net goal for Martone (18), registering the hattrick at 16:57.

The Black and Gold hit the road for the first of three straight nights on Fri, Mar 15 against the London Knights.
